Issue a prescription

Write, check, and save an Rx, then open, print, or email it.

Useful for Doctor

  1. Open the patient, go to the Prescriptions tab, and choose Add prescription.
  2. Enter each drug in the guided fields: Medication, Quantity and Sig (directions). Add another medication adds a line, or Switch to free-text entry to type the whole Rx.
  3. Read the safety alerts at the top if they appear. They are advisory and never block you, but worth a look.
  4. Set the Prescription date and, if needed, the Follow-up date. For a controlled drug tick Regulated drug (it switches on by itself when you write a known regulated drug, such as diazepam or tramadol): your PTR and S2 numbers print, the e-signature is left off so you can sign by hand, and No refill is set.
  5. Preview PDF shows the slip as it will print, beside the form. Choose Save prescription.
  6. On its card in the list, Open PDF and Print work straight away (on a phone, Share takes the place of Print: PDF for Mail, Files or printing, Picture for Messenger, which does not take PDFs, or Link, which opens the PDF without signing in for 7 days and is noted in the Audit Trail), and Email asks first. View opens it to Edit or Delete it. Regenerate PDF draws the slip again from the saved prescription, so one saved before a change to your letterhead or signature picks it up. An emailed one shows an Emailed mark.

Common questions

Why does it say something is missing for a regulated drug?

A regulated prescription prints your PTR and S2 numbers. Add the missing one in My account › Profile.

How do I write a prescription for a diagnosis?

Open the record in the Medical History tab and choose Create prescription (Create another prescription once one is linked). The form starts from its medicines and the prescription is linked to that diagnosis. If a visit of that day is open, the diagnosis joins it, and a prescription-only record you saved in that visit is folded into it.

Two prescriptions of the same day should be one.

The tab offers Combine… under Possible duplicates; nothing is combined until you confirm.
